Story

Robert has always said that he would not want flowers at his funeral and that the money spent on floral tributes to be donated to a good cause.

Robert spent his last few days in the High Dependency Unit at Queens Hospital Romford. We have decided as a family to put the money collected towards some much needed equipment that the department cannot afford to purchase due to cutbacks in their budget. These are simple things like supportive recliner chairs to allow very sick and terminally ill patients to be able to get out of bed for a short time.

Letter from Queens Hospital - In Memory of Robert Arrowsmith Through the kind and generous donations being given in memory of Robert Arrowsmith, the HDU ward at Queen’s Hospital, Romford is hoping to purchase one or more Delta chairs.  This update provides details of the chair and how it will benefit the patients and staff.

The Delta Chair

The Delta chair is a specialist chair that is designed with an integrated pressure management system in the seat and back rest that ensures predominantly bed-ridden patients can spend longer periods of time in them.  As such they can be utilised to improve patient welfare by helping them regain some form of normality by allowing them to do something as simple as sitting in a chair to eat their food.  Due to their design these chairs can also enable bed ridden patients to be moved to a bathroom where they can be washed in private.

The design and cushioning ensure that patients at risk of pressure and bed sores are less likely to develop them as they can be seated in the chair to give them respite from being in bed for long periods.  The Chair has the ability to be easily adjusted and positioned facilitate ultimate pressure management without over-exertion by the carer or indeed the user.

Currently there is only two on the ward which is in high demand due to the benefits they bring.  With the kind donations received in memory of Robert we will be able to buy at least one further chair so that even more patients on HDU will benefit.  Not only will the chair improve their welfare but the staff’s well-being knowing that they are providing the best possible care.

King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity

King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity aims to improve patient and staff welfare and enhance the hospital environment for patients, staff and visitors at both Queen’s Hospital, Romford and King George’s Hospital, Ilford.  Whilst the NHS provides the funding for the core services it is through the kindness of our supporters that enables the charity to fund projects like that of providing Delta Chairs on HDU.
