Story
In 2006 I was told that, without surgery, I had around 4 weeks left to live. Shortly afterwards an ovary, fallopian tube, and cyst 38cm across were exchanged for one heck of a scar and the determination for something positive to emerge from this experience. I'm dedicating 672 hours (the 4 weeks I nearly had left) to raising money for Wellbeing of Women, a charity that funds research in all aspects of reproductive and gynaecological health. I will also raise awareness about some of the health issues that affect many women today. To follow my 672 hours as they unfold, visit my blog: https://672hours.wordpress.com.
Why support Wellbeing of Women?
Wellbeing of Women is committed to improving the health of women and babies by funding medical research, providing training grants, and raising awareness. Last year the charity celebrated its 50th anniversary; over this 50-year period, pain relief in child birth, baby scans and screening during pregnancy, IVF, and cervical cancer screening were all enabled through research funded by Wellbeing of Women.
Despite much progress, however:
- 1 in 2 women in the UK will suffer from some kind of reproductive or gynaecological health problem;
- 17 babies a day die in the UK at or near birth (they are either stillborn or die shortly after birth);
- 145 women a week in the UK die of a gynaecological cancer;
- 2 million women suffer the pain of endometriosis;
- 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage.
A donation to Wellbeing of Women is an investment into funding years of research that will impact hugely on women for generations to come.
