Story
I'm a cyclist. I can ride for miles and miles and miles, and finished a 25,000km mega-tour last year. So you might think that a 10km run will be a walk in the park. Wrong! I'm bricking it! Cycling and running just don't mix for me. Before this year, I'd never even run a kilometre without stopping (several times).
You might also think that a two-year bike ride would be an amazing experience. And you would be absolutely right. But it hasn't been an easy thing to follow, and adapting to being back in London has been a real challenge.
This spring, I did some volunteering at Heart 'n' Soul's creative workshops. It was a great way to make friends and find inspiration for my new life. I had always thought that being a volunteer was about giving, but at Heart 'n' Soul it was all about sharing. In fact, I'm pretty sure that what I came away with was far more valuable than anything I had to offer.
Working with Heart 'n' Soul's varied, vital crew has been a real privilege. I hadn't had much contact with learning-disabled people before, and as this bunch got to know me they gently overcame my well-meaning prejudices through conversation, hugs and the creativity and openness of their art and performance. Both the work they make and the fulfilment it brings them are very special. Heart 'n' Soul do important work that genuinely changes lives, so please support them as much as you can – and as for the run, don't think for a moment I'm going to enjoy it!!.
