Story
I have been determined the past 3 months to fill my summer up with a memorable but eye-opening experience. I came across the Karen Hilltribes Trust volunteer projects and was instantly inspired by their projects. Here in the UK, clean water is taken for granted. It is a basic necessity that in today's world should be available to everyone in all parts of the world.
The indigenous Karen people live in the remote parts of Northern Thailand, thus their access to water is limited and is often dirty so diseases are easily contracted. The solution is simple, a clean water supply can and will prevent diseases such as Cholera, Typhoid and Malaria. A direct clean water supply mean the Karen people do not have to travel to find a water supply and so providing more time in the day for agricultural work and education.
The Karen Hilltribes Trust is a UK based charity founded following the death of English student Richard Worsley who volunteered with the Karen people to help them to build a better future. The charity has three key aims, these are; Improving health, increasing access to education and securing better livelihoods. The project I will be completing will be challenging but thoroughly rewarding, as I will be able to witness the direct impact of building a clean water supply.
The money I will be raising goes directly to the charity to provide the resources to build the supply. Any other personal expenses (i.e. flights, injections, visas, etc) will be paid by me separately, so any donations whether small or large will be greatly appreciated by the Karen people.
