We work very closely with a good friend and fellow St James's Place colleague, Martin.
Earlier this year, Martin and his wife were dealt some devastating news regarding their son, who is one of their elder set of twins, aged 11.
After 6 months of increasing pain, frustration and many hospital visits, their Son, Joshua, was diagnosed with a rare Bone Cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma, which affects just 30 children a year. Joshua has the tumour in his pelvis, knees and some of the bones linked to the base of the spine. He is undergoing an intensive course of Chemotherapy over 28 weeks at the UCL Hospital in Euston, London. Side effects of the different chemotherapy drugs include sickness, chronic ulcers, dizziness and loss of hair. Joshua is therefore having anti-sickness and pain drugs to counter these effects. He has a line from his arm into the top of his heart through which the chemotherapy is administered. He needed a PEG tube to get nutrients directly to his tummy. However, he has recently had to have corrective surgery to repair damage to the bowel due to the PEG - (involving 3 separate hospitals in 2 weeks) - which has thankfully been successful.
Despite all this, Joshua remains a positive and happy little boy, always smiling and upbeat and loves the opportunity to be around his twin Ben, and his younger twin brothers, Jack and Sam.
He managed to climb 9 steps last week which was unthinkable previously.
One of the most important aspects of the support they have had as a family throughout has been CLIC Sargent, the Cancer Charity For Children. They provide practical, emotional and caring support to both Joshua (Make A Wish scheme - access to unbelievable "once in a lifetime" treats) and the rest of the family (eg Paul's House - which allows them to spend time together as a family very near to where Joshua gets his treatment in London as well as practical help with applications for blue Badges etc) - nothing is too much trouble and along with the simply amazing nursing/oncology/pain/play/physiotherapist teams at UCLH they have made their lives as tolerable as possible. They try to provide this amazing support across the country and rely upon fundraising efforts to continue to do so.
We wanted to do something to support the whole family and have decided to complete a 10km trail run at Bedgebury Forest.
Raising funds for St. James's Place Foundation and CLIC Sargent. St. James's Place will match £ for £ any funds raised for CLIC Sargent, with the matched funds being used to benefit the causes supported by the Foundation.
