Story
Hi Everyone,
I have decided to take the plunge and run my debut marathon in London on the 24th of April 2016.
I have chosen to run for the World Cancer Research Fund UK in loving memory of all my grandparents and also in celebration of some incredible people; Ted Gorman, Linda McMeckan, Neil Tookey, Helen Crystal, Terry Watson, Lynn Watson and Lyn Brown. All of whom have been truly inspirational in how they have dealt with and overcome their cancers.
I'm sure everyone reading this page will either have been diagnosed with cancer themselves or know a friend or family member that has. Unfortunately, it is all too common and statistics now indicate that one in every two people born after 1960 in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime (Cancer Research UK - cited 1st November 2015).
The World Cancer Research Fund UK funds and supports vital scientific research into cancer prevention at many of the UK's leading universities and research institutions. Their vision is simple - to enhance understanding of cancer risk and to explore new ways to reduce it, in the hope that the quoted 'one in two' statistic can become at least 'one in twenty' in the very near future.
Some of the major cancer breakthroughs that have occurred in recent years have been a direct result of research that has been funded in the UK by organisations such as the World Cancer Research Fund UK. As you will know, this research is highly specialised and requires a significant amount of funding. So I invite you all to make a donation and no matter how big or small, it will go a long way in contributing toward the critical research that is allowing more people to live a cancer free life - keeping friends and family together for longer.
Please give whatever you can and help prevent cancer in all of its forms. Thank you for reading my page, I am very grateful.
Best wishes,
Sam
