Story
I will be heading for Mount Kilimanjaro attempting to summit the "Roof of Africa". I'll be travelling in August 2016 with my good friend Margaret and my brother in law Jeff.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. It's also the only place on earth where you can clearly see the curvature of the earth!
We'll be trekking to 19,341 feet (5,895m) via the Lemosho route which includes a scramble up the Barranco Wall - a 257m wall of rocks!
I'll need to be in the best possible physical condition to cope with the immense physical challenge and the (almost inevitable) altitude sickness. The training I've been putting off needs to start properly now!
I am doing this to raise money for a charity called Blue Skye Thinking. Blue Skye Thinking was started by a local couple (Dad is the Director of Sport at Abingdon School where I work) following their son Skye's diagnosis with medulloblastoma, an aggressive and cancerous brain tumour. Tragically Skye died (aged only 5), on 29 August 2014, not from the tumour itself but from the side affects of his treatment.
Skye's bravery, and that of his family, have been a source of inspiration to me. I am climbing Kilimanjaro and raising money for Blue Skye Thinking in order to support research so that all children diagnosed with brain tumours will have a better chance of survival and a better quality of life post-treatment.
I'd really appreciate your support!
