We lead a movement of engineers to create global responsibility

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In November 2016 I will be going to Mexico for 6 months on an Engineers Without Borders Global Engineer Fellowship Programme, to work with a local NGO in San Miguel de Allende called Caminos de Agua.

Engineers Without Borders UK brings people, ideas and engineering together to deliver solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. Their vision is a world where everyone has access to the engineering they need for a life free from poverty. Where engineering is for everyone, everywhere. They work with their members, partner organisations and the education sector to enable people to use their technical skills to aid human development. EWB UK believe that together, a new generation of globally responsible engineers can be created.
The Global Engineer Fellowship programme sends qualified engineers along with a group of engineering students to work on collaborative projects with partner organisations that address engineering skills and knowledge gaps. The programme is designed as a shared learning and development experience for passionate engineers from the partner’ organisation and Engineers Without Border UK.

For many communities in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, fluoride levels in groundwater have been rising due to overexploitation of aquifers, sometimes 15 times higher than the WHO and Mexican guidelines, which can lead to severe dental and skeletal fluorosis. On my fellowship placement, I will be working with Caminos de Agua to continue in the development of a bone char filtration system which aims to reduce the level of fluoride to an acceptable limit for consumption. Part of the aim of the placement will also be to pilot the implementation of filter systems as well as look at the viability of building community kilns to facilitate localised bone char production.

Your donation means a huge deal and will go a long way in helping me undertake my placement, helping the communities around San Miguel de Allende get access to safe drinking water, and helping Caminos de Agua and EWB UK achieve their visions. I appreciate all the help and support you're able to give, no matter how small, it all makes a difference.
