Story
I am walking over hot coals to raise money for the Bethesda Hospice in memory of a very special person – my nana – who passed away on the 7th of August 2012.
The Firewalk will take place at Stornoway Golf Club, on Friday 27th of September, and we hope to raise as much money as possible to help the Hospice continue their good work. For those who don’t know what a Firewalk is, it involves walking bare-foot across glowing embers at 600-800 farenheit.
My nana. ‘Mima West’, spent her final 3 weeks at Bethesda and seeing first hand the fantastic care she received there has inspired me to raise money to ensure that other families are afforded the same level of care.
Before she fell ill, my nana was a very private person, as well as extremely active, so it is testament to the fantastic and friendly team at Bethesda that she was made to feel at ease at this difficult time.
Not only was the patient care amazing, but the staff also took care of our whole family in what was the hardest time in our lives. We were made to feel welcome at any time, day or night and this meant the world to us.
The Hospice relies on the generosity of the local community, and I hope that the money raised at this Firewalk will help them continue their vital work, while allowing me and my family the opportunity to remember our nana on this special night – I know that she would be very proud.
Bethesda Hospice is based in Stornoway and supplies a much needed and caring service to those who are terminally ill and who require palliative care. It provides a relaxed, homely atmosphere, where patients and their families can come to terms with the turmoil they often feel. The service is provided to all, irrespective of race, colour or creed.
'Bethesda Home is a jewel in the Hebridean Crown of loving care and compassion. To keep this gem brightly shining, the support of the whole community is vital.
