In September 2013, the Sikh Aid team will be travelling to Kenya to undertake two exciting projects.

Dental Camp

Sikh Aid's dental team, led by Dr. Rajit Panesar, have joined up with Nairobi-based Dr Jandu, who has set up a charity dental facility in Makindu for people to come over and volunteer to do dentistry for the poor.

The dentists will use this facility, based directly opposite the famous Makindu Gurudwara,  to conduct a 3 day dental camp on local people, who otherwise would not be able to afford medical treatment.

The facility has proper dental chairs, assistant dental nurses and proper sterilization facilities for instruments. Over the course of the camp the team will be able to see hundreds patients, many of them children and many who have been living in pain for months / years.

The cost to Sikh Aid will be for use of the facility surgery, assistants and materials, machinery, instruments etc. The dentists will pay for the own travel and accommodation costs from their own pocket.

Installation of Water Pump

Working with a Kenyan charity called the Ramgharia Youth Association (RYA), who have vast experience in placing water pumps (also known as bore holes) in many parts of Africa, Sikh Aid International will be funding the installation of a water pump in a deprived area of Kenya.

Below is a brief summary of the activities required to install a water pump:

1.       Identify a site with the greatest need where it would be most beneficial for the locals to get fresh, clean water

2.       Get commissioning from the local government

3.       Instruct a company to dig the bore hole

4.       Dig it deep enough so as to get to water

5.       Place the piping/facilities

6.       Final opening.

The process can take between 3-6 months in total.

The cost of a borehole / water pump however is NOT cheap. It can cost between £14,000 – 20,000! This is a great deal of money. However, this water pump will benefit people with fresh clean water to drink, wash and cook with for the rest of their lives. Something that we all have at our finger tips. So in the grand scale of things it will be money very well spent, once the water pump is in place and will help thousands of people.
