Story
Switchboard volunteers have provided support and information to millions of people since their phones began ringing in 1974.
In the early 1980s, Switchboard was the leading source of information about AIDS. In 1983 it organised the first national AIDS conference and many of its volunteers - like me - went on to develop some of the best HIV charities, including Terrence Higgins Trust and National AIDS Manual.
Switchboard continues to provide support for the LGBT+ community on the phone, by email and instant messaging. It receives no statutory funding and about 160 volunteers ensure the lines are open every day of the year. Switchboard relies on friends like you to meet its running costs, so please be generous and help Switchboard offer calm words of support and advice when they are needed most.
