While in Kenya I will be volunteering with the team from African Adventures, at Ronaken school, which is located in the vicinity of the Rhonda slums. During my stay, I will be teaching and coaching the children, as well as helping with renovation work on the school grounds.
Ronaken was set up by Jane Mwangi in 2012; the project educates children who live in the heart of the Rhonda slums and come from extremely deprived backgrounds. Jane saw the poor living conditions of the children in the area and decided to open the school to help them. Jane lives on site and leases land that she owns, to help support the running of the project.
Volunteers with African Adventures, have already helped to renovate two classrooms over last summer. This year besides taking volunteers to the school, the African Adventures Foundation has helped to provide the funds for building materials, in order to construct a new perimeter fence at Ronaken school. This will help to improve the school's security, and ensure the safety of the children who attend. The project has already grown in the time that African Adventures have been working with Ronaken; increasing student numbers and vastly improving the school's infrastructure.
£200 Of the money raised for the Kenya trip will go towards local, community projects run by The Albion Foundation.
"The Albion Foundation works in partnership with West Bromwich Albion Football Club, using the medium of football and the kudos of the football club to provide sporting and educational opportunities to the most disadvantaged and needy members of our local community."
The community projects focus on three key areas; education, disability, and providing sporting opportunities.
