Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The situation in Kenya for deafblind children

Deafblindness is more common in Kenya than in the UK because there is little health care, far more diseases affecting sight and hearing and limited immunisation. There are an estimated 14,000 deafblind people in Kenya. There are only 5 deafblind school units and a further 5 vocational training units in this huge country of 582,646 Sq Km. Some of these schools are in a very poor state. Although, the  teachers are dedicated, many are not really trained to handle deafblind children. Education is free in Kenya but residential costs are not and most children live hundreds of miles away from their nearest school and come from families who cannot afford this cost.

How Project Uhuru plans to change all that

Project Uhuru is about building a long-term sustainable programme, in conjunction with the Kenyan Government, to make a difference to deafblind children’s lives— so that they can learn to support themselves and their families. It will achieve this by:

 · Developing Infrastructure – Create dormitories so that children can attend and Sense International will pay their travel and residential fees; Build new classrooms so more children can attend; procure materials and equipment in the vocational units so teenagers can learn trades such as knitting, weaving, carpentry

 · Developing teacher training with the Kenyan Institute of Education because it’s very specialist

 · Creating an apprentice scheme to improve vocational training

· Linking the existing educational units up so they can share their experiences and learn from one another

· Working with government so that they can eventually take responsibility

I have committed my time and £10,000 per annum of my own resources for 3 years.  I have organised this Mt Kenya trek for 20 people to raise awareness and funds. Please help me achieve this goal by donating generously.  Your money will help give deafblind children in developing countries a life worth living.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

Thank you for your support.
