His story.....
Many people will remember Steve for his prowess on the football field ;-) this was the sport he held most dear and was an avid supporter of Chelsea FC, but in 1995 he was diagnosed with 'bronchiectasis' which signalled the start of his long and difficult illness. He was forced to retire from playing which he regretted terribly, but maintained a keen interest throughout the remainder of his life. Many years followed in which he led a relatively normal life, peppered with medication and hospital visits. He continued to work hard providing a loving and stable home for his family. The severity of his illness increased slowly during this time - his condition now recognised as Cystic Fibrosis - until in January 2011, his health took a noticeable decline. He was placed on the Lung Transplant list in September 2011and was extremely positive about the prospect of new lungs and the promise of a better quality of life. In the last 3 years Steve battled relentlessly in his bid to maintain his health in readiness for an operation, but he would never have made it through the past 18 years were it not for the medical treatment, love and support provided by all the staff at the Royal Brompton Hospital - from consultants and nurses to cleaners, catering staff and other volunteers & care givers. They were/are our 'extended family' and I know they will remember Steve for his honesty & determination but above all, his enduring sense of humour and we will remember them, for the life they gave Steve xxx RIP xxx
