Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Until I was hit with PND after the birth of my second son in 2011, I had no idea how common and serious post natal depression could be.
I was referred to Homestart in Redditch (North East Worcestershire -NEWS), a charity I'd never heard of, for support. My Co-ordinator became a vital lifeline, I was matched with a volunteer who came over once a week, giving me a break and a chance to talk, sleep or relax. I went on a parenting course with a crèche which gave me time with others in a similar situation, and skills to cope better. I also attended a free parent and toddler group where I was able to relax and entertain the boys. I could always call and speak to a friendly person when I struggled.
Critically, when I realised I was getting worse rather than better, I saw a doctor for medication. He gave me leaflets and told me to come back in a week... I called my coordinator in floods of tears and she stepped in immediately and got me seen the next day by the Senior Doctor.
In Crawley in 2013, (Horsham & Mid Sussex - CHAMS) Homestart did not have enough funding or volunteers to offer me the same support. Luckily I made a supportive group of friends and am recovering. There are others who are not receiving the same level of support and there will always be more people diagnosed with PND needing help.
I will be running two Half Marathons: Wimbledon Common on 27th of July and Bexhill Poppy Half on 27th of November. In between I am completing the Crawley Late Summer Triathlon.
Crawley and Worcestershire Homestart have agreed to split my sponsorship money, and use it to train and support more volunteers in both parts of England.
I will also be entering or holding other events to meet my target.
Postnatal Depression is not always discussed, but so common. For women suffering, and their families, the support Homestart give can make a huge difference in beating this illness.
If you do not feel comfortable donating online, you can give through text message or donate in person.
I really appreciate every penny and hope that I will be able to train as a volunteer myself at the next opportunity.
Thank you, not just from me, but from all the families who will benefit.
