Story

As some of you might know, my mum has recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and is undergoing treatment. She has completed chemo and radiotherapy and is coming up to a big operation in February.

Oesophageal cancer is a cancer that not many people know about and one that often goes undiscovered until too late. We are incredibly lucky that my mum's cancer has hopefully been caught early enough for the possibility of a cure.

I have had long hair my entire life. All I have ever had done is get it trimmed. It's never been properly cut and the idea terrifies me. I am going for a crew cut rather than full shaving as my mum feels it would be too much if all my hair was gone.

Seeing my mum and family go through everything these last three months (despite how strong everyone has been) has made me feel incredibly powerless. If by raising money for Ochre I can do anything to stop someone else's family going through the same feelings then that is eminently worth the loss of my dignity!

About the charity

Ochre's main aim is to promote awareness of oesophageal cancer to the public, politicians and professionals by holding meetings, functions, talks and courses, and by establishing a website and distributing leaflets. They also provide funding for equipment for early diagnosis and staging of the tumour prior to treatment and for curative and palliative treatment.
