In just 8 weeks time ‘Team DARO RunClub’ are taking on a 10k challenge. Running for an hour, on an undoubtedly cold and rainy November Sunday morning in Coventry isn't everyone’s idea of fun, and that counts doubly if you consider that it would be no exaggeration to call the majority of this small band of crusaders a bunch of couch potatoes.

‘Team DARO RunClub’ consist of Geoff Savage, Carol Fryer, Marc Hornby, Ian Booth and Jonathan Carter, and for our day jobs we encourage alumni to support many projects at Aston. We’re taking on this challenge to encourage Aston staff and friends to support us in raising funds for one project that we all see as being hugely important.

Every year, Aston takes on hundreds of students from the lowest income backgrounds, it teaches them, challenges them, inspires them, trains them, gives them the chance to work in industry and then they fly off into the world pioneering the social mobility that gave them their chance. Scholarships are an effective way of helping students from less well-off backgrounds meet the financial challenges of going to University and with nearly half of Aston's undergraduates coming from families with low incomes, these are an important source of support and can enable these students to really fulfill their potential. 

The Aston Aspires scholarship will support a student that comes from a household with an income of less than £18k per year. It provides £1,000 to help a student through their first year with us. Our aim is to raise the £1,000 for one scholarship so that Aston staff are joining our alumni community and other groups in helping our students.
