Story
We are climbing to the summit of Africa’s greatest peak (all 5,895 meters/19,341 feet!) to raise funds to stop people going blind from neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as river blindness and trachoma.
Having seen first-hand the impact of these devastating diseases through our work at Sightsavers, we decided to take on this gruelling challenge with our partner organisation, The END Fund. We thought that trekking for 7 days at high altitude, with only 2 months to train, would be a fitting way to show our dedication to eliminating NTDs for good!
Ridding the world of NTDs will be no less than a milestone in the history of human health, benefiting a billion people who live in places where these diseases blind, maim and kill. We're providing treatment to millions of people, working with The END Fund and other partners committed to eliminating NTDs. But there's much more to be done, and that's where this trek, and you, come in...
Our international team comprises John, our Regional Director for East, Central and Southern Africa, Moses from our Uganda office, Mike, our Director of Major Giving, and Carly and Heather from our UK office.
It costs very little to protect someone’s sight so, no matter how big or small, your donation will make a huge impact in the fight to eliminate NTDs:
£8 will fund an operation to stop the pain and suffering of someone with advanced trachoma and save their sight
£28 provides treatment to prevent 400 people losing their sight to river blindness
£140 protects an entire community against the threat of trachoma
So please donate what you can to support our efforts. We would all be very grateful indeed for your support.
Oh, and Mike asked us to mention that he still has that metal plate in his ankle, so he'll suffer more than the rest of us. But he's being a real hero about it.
