We provide specialist palliative care to the people of Cornwall

Story

We had a great time watching the Red Arrows from the river back in August.  Thank you to all who came and helped us raise over £700!  We have provisionally booked again for next year and I hope that by then I will understand the point of paddleboarding (those who were there will know!!)

Fantastic time had by all on the river and the final total raised was £700!  £350 of this has been sent on to both Cornwall Hospice Care and FLEET - thank you all for your help.

Back in April this year we lost Mareve Hansen (Nick - my husband's) Mum. In an incredibly kind gesture, Mareve's family donated a share of the collection in Mareve's memory to Cornwall Hospice Care and it came to £253.34.  I am very grateful to Peter, Katrina, Nick, Sammy and Paul in particular for such a kindness and know that Mareve would approve.

18th September - we are off again on one of our party boat adventures.  This time from Falmouth aboard the Princessa.  We're leaving after work and will be back in Falmouth for 10, in time for those who need it to get the train back to Truro.  £12.50 will include a marvellous Philps pasty.  These nights are a right giggle and we hope to raise loads of money for two charities, FLEET and Cornwall Hospice Care.  Contact me on dhansen@wwfp.net or 07967 218660 for tickets.  x

I am most grateful to Nick's family who very generously offered that the proceeds of the collection from dear Mareve's funeral should be split 50/50 with Marie Therese House and Cornwall Hospice Care.  Mareve's clothes were donated to CHC and I am so touched by the kindness - thank you to the Hansen/Murray clan xx

Had my eye off the ball a bit with moving house 4 times in under a year but I'm back now!

THE MOST WONDERFUL SUPPORT FROM SANTANDER MEANS THAT THE TOTAL RAISED BY THE SUNSHINE BALL WAS £5625!!!!  THANK YOU EVERY ONE, FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. IT'S INCREDIBLE!

Another brilliant night on Friday at the Sunshine Ball - thank you so much to all those who came along, donated prizes, gave their time, everyone involved for a truly great night.  So far we're up to £2800 on the night but there will be more to come yet!  We'll be going again next year, watch this space!

We're definitely on - 4th July - Merchants Manor Hotel in Falmouth for the 2014 Sunshine Ball.  A welcome drink on arrival, delicious 3 course meal, luxury auction and raffle and probably best of all, dancing to Double Bounce who gave us all such a great time last year.  £32.50 per head.

In October I shall be 50 - I would love it if as many of my friends as can, would join me at the ball in July to celebrate.  xx

Sorry I've been quiet for a while, there's been a bit going on!  Christmas came and went in a whirl and here we are at the end of January already!  How did that happen?  So, plans so far for this year.

Maytime - coffee morning - come along and join us for a coffee and a catch up - we'll let you know details nearer the time

July 4th - Sunshine Ball, venue to be announced shortly but make a note in your diaries!

Early September - another cruise down the Fal, we have booked a stunning summer evening

Autumn - a bake off event - any ideas as to how you would like this to look then please just shout!

Look forward to seeing you!  x Thank you again for all your support. x

Cracking cruise down the river a couple of weeks ago, we raised £423 and we are delighted - thank you so much for all your support and a great night (including the weather!).

WOW!  WWFP have some lovely video of aerial shots of Cornwall and are now happy to provide these to others for charity donation.  This week two generous businesses have donated a total of £250 and it's going to WOW!  Wow!  Thank you WWFP!

Next event. Summer cruise down the Fal, leaving by Penrose Outdoors in Truro at 6pm pm 4th October, £15 per head to include pasty and a glass of bubbly. Contact me on dhansen@wwfp.net for tickets.   It was a great laugh last year and should be again this  year!  (The weather was against us on 6th September and so we are trying again!!)

The Sunshine Ball was a great success and raised in the region of £4000!  Massive thanks to all who donated and joined us and to Clydesdale bank who matched funded, it was a brilliant night!

Next big event - 21st June 2013 - 7pm for 7.30pm.  The Sunshine Ball at the Penventon Park Hotel, Redruth.  We'll be welcomed with a Bellini and then enjoy a delicious 3 course meal , followed by coffee and mints.  An auction and luxury raffle, a game or two and we will then dance the night away to a live 12 piece band with carriages at midnight.  Contact me on dhansen@wwfp.net to book your table.

February 2013 - Becky Bendle and her Mum ran a car boot sale and some of Lynne's friends kindly ran a cake stall for the hospice - another £100 raised, thank you all so much for your efforts.

Bags to Riches was a twinkly evening by the pretty Christmas tree at the home of my dear colleague, Lynne Williams.  Mulled wine and mince pies set the evening off nicely and we raised £46, which was great, given that we had such a cosy and warm time.  A futher £12.50 was raised by selling left over mince pies and donations from Kelly and Suzanne in WWFP office (in lieu of Christmas cards, thank you ladies!.

So here we are heading towards another Christmas, where does the time go, eh?  Team Sylvia and especially the Women of Worldwide wish you all a very peaceful and merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Becky Bendle's Dad celebrated a birthday and requested charity gifts rather than presents and £105 has been generously donated to our cause.  Thanks Jeff!

On 10th December 2012 the Women of Worldwide are holding a "Bags to Riches" event, where we shall be selling bags, jewellery and scarves that you take away on the night.  Contact me on dhansen@wwfp.net for more details.  We shall be having mulled wine and mince pies too!

1st October 2012 - we cruised, we sang and we ate and drank a little on the Enterprise boat on Friday.  We sold cakes durng the day and we raised...... £388!  Thank you to all who supported us and had some fun with us, we will keep you posted on the next event.  xx

12th June 2012 - we totted up the takings from the Chyvelah Vale Stree party for the jubilee and we raised £88 for Team Sylvia and £88 for Precious lives.  We had a fabulous time and thank all the local residents who joined us.  Already thinking about the next one!

24th April 2012

WOW indeed!  The Women of Worldwide hosted the first event of the year in support of Team Sylvia and raised £106 by eating tea and cake, sounds perfect to me!  Tesco Redruth, Westcountry Fruit Sales, Diana George and Rosamund Derry all kindly donated raffle prizes, for which we are very grateful.  The rain held off for the garden tour, expertly led by Tom the Head Gardener.  I think it's safe to say a jolly good time was had by all!

March 2012 -  How time flies eh?  I am delighted to announce that the Women of Worldwide have joined forces (we are certainly a force to be reckoned with!) and our chosen charity to raise tons of money this year is, yes, Team Sylvia!! Thank you so much to those of you involved and keep an eye on this page for updates on what is going on and where.  Any bright ideas for money raising fun are more than welcome!!  You can like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/WowTheWomenOfWorldwide?ref=tn_tnmn

Christmas 2011

Well, we had a laugh last night.  An elite few went carol singing around our area, left it a bit late in the evening and a lot of unanswered doors but we raised an extra tenner, all helps!  Merry Christmas and thanks to Diana, Sharon, Fiona and Cathie!

19th December 2011 Crikey, how did that happen?  Almost Christmas again?  For those of you looking to make Christmas more valuable this year, the pot is really grateful; for your donation, whatever size.  Next year we are working on a watercolour workshop and a really fun dance night, watch this space!  Happy Christmas one and all!  xx

29th October 2011 Huge thanks to my father-in-law Peter Hansen who ran a cycle event and found he made a profit, kindly donating that profit to Team Sylvia. Thanks Peter! xx

6th October 2011 - A sad day for those of us affected by pancreatic cancer, Steve Jobs for a long time showed that illness that it had no place but it sadly took over in the end, we shall miss him. I've been away a while but we need to crack on now.  Christmas is around the corner again and my birthday on the 12th October, if you feel inclined to give me a little gift then pop a pound or two in the pot here please!  Planning to get cracking with our findraising again very soon, been busy with exams, just 2 more to go of this tranche!

5th August 2011. There is a huge party in Heaven today, Mum is now one year old today so there is angelic jelly and ice cream all round, party, party!  If you have lost a loved one to cancer and experienced the difference that a hospice makes in the final days, then please feel free to dig deep and donate.  My plan is to hit £5000 raised in the first twelve months and we are about £300 short of that so we have a month to get there.  Many, many thanks to all of those who have helped and joined in so far.  xx

Big, big thanks to 730 Squadron Truro Air Training Corps for their gift to us, another step closer, thanks lads!

A huge, huge thank you to Becky Bendle, Lynne Juleff, my Dad Bill, Lydia, Jordan and Nick for helping me out today at Sainsbury's in Truro today doing a collection, which raised £271.71!!  Yeeha!  Thank you Mr Anonymous for taking us up over the magic £4000 recently, we have a way to go but we will get there, keep an eye on us for the next fundraiser..........

Give me some ideas as to what you would like to do, a ladies race day, a mystery tour in a vintage bus, sit in custard (or pay to watch others do it), a treasure hunt, auction, talent competition - what's your favourite for our next fundraiser - come on - let's have some fun!

29th April, what a day!  Wonderful wedding and our street party raised over £100 to be split between Precious Lives and Team Sylvia - how to have fun and raise money, yeeha!

He did it!  Great run on 13th March from Paul Dennison.  He ran the Duchy marathon in 4 hours 35 minutes and 2 seconds (despite only just getting over a chest infection the previous week!) and we have a winner of the surfing lessons and the night in the hotel, being Mrs Mavis James from Cornwall, who tells me that she may just gift her lessons to her brother, in order to improve his surfing skills! This event has raised £565 plus gift aid and I am so grateful to Paul, Rob at the English Surfing Federation Surf School (and Helen who worked her magic there!) as well as Sam from the Metro hotel in Newquay.  Thank you so much all of you. xx

A great night on 4th March in Warwickshire with pasties, star gazey pie and thunder and lightning, mmmm! Fantastic music from Dos Gatos, we need to get them down to Cornwall so you can all enjoy their brilliant music. Plenty raised with the raffle and lots of folk entering the competition  - final tally was £280.40 split between the Shakespeare Hospice and Team Sylvia.  Massive thanks to Jay Moody and his trusty team for organising  a really great evening and to the band who donated their time, we are so grateful.  Lots of people entered the surf and hotel competition which brought in roughly another £100 on the night, fabulous!

And what is more, Spring is really battling to win through over the last knockings of winter, hooray!

THE BACKGROUND TO ALL THIS................................

On 5th August 2010 after a 20 month struggle with pancreatic cancer, my Mum took the express to Heaven, leaving via the gateway of St Julia's Hospice in Hayle.  This amazing place looked after Mum for 9 weeks - she was a fighter!  I have calculated that Mum's care cost £38000 and I would like to raise this to ensure that someone else who needs this great place (or Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell where Mum spent a week) will be able to benefit from it. "Team Sylvia" was launched on 8th September 2010 in honour of my dear Mum and because she was a generous spirited and loving woman who would have wanted others to benefit from the wonderful care that she received and for which she was very thankful.

Just found these childhood memories of Mum's and thought what interesting reading they make...

Childhood Memories in Hayle Cornwall

My memories of the war are rather sketchy as I was only 15 months old when war broke out but I do have some.
I was born in Lelant, Cornwall where I lived with my mother and father.
Dad was called up and went to serve in the Pioneer corps. After a while, Mum & I moved to Hayle, where most of my memories were made.

One of my earliest memories is the wearing of gas masks. I had a  ‘mickey mouse’ type and to this day I love the smell of rubber!  I remember being at school in the playground with the rest of the school, carrying our gas masks over our shoulders.

I can remember the barrage balloon over Hayle power station and the dropping of foil strips. I had no idea of their purpose but they were good to play with!

Another time, my mother and I were living with my aunt in Hayle. One day some men came and took down the iron railings in her front garden. I can remember being very upset about this and thinking ‘how dare they take them down’!!
My aunt had a morrison shelter (I think it was called that) in her dining room and there were times when the siren would go and we all got into it. Either my aunt would say ‘after you Cecil’, and the other would reply ‘no, after you Claud’. Then one of them would say ‘oh, I have forgotten my knitting’ and go off and get it!!
When we were at home we would have to make do with the kitchen table!

Sometimes Mum and I would watch the planes going overhead and we would wave to them as they droned by.

My mother would take me to the camp where Dad was billeted. I seem to remember one Christmas, spending some time with him in the camp. We played ‘housie, housie’ or bingo as it is known today.
Dad took me to see where he slept and there were rows of neat beds, each with a gun placed in a precise position on it.

We would go to Hayle railway station and see Dad off on the train back to his billet, after home leave.

We had a land girl once – I don’t think I liked her very much – My mother had made our dinner and I was sitting opposite the land girl (can’t remember her name). Mum had put the dinner down in front of her, whereupon she gave it a very hard look. I asked her ‘what’s the matter with it?’  She replied very tersely ‘ Nothing I am allowed to look at my food aren’t I ?’ I remember thinking that she was looking at it as though it was poison!

Mum used to cook with dried egg and sometimes I used to dip my finger into the powder to get a taste – it wasn’t very nice!!  A treat for me was to mix a small amount of cocoa powder with a small amount of sugar and eat it with a spoon!!

We were walking down the street one day and there were three men in front of us and I was told they were Italians. I learnt in later years that they were probably prisoners of war.

My mother took the accumulator to a shop in the town to be recharged. This was used to power the radio. It looked like a smaller version of the old kind of car battery I seem to remember!

On VE day I was allowed up late to see the street lights switch on. The war was over.

In 1947, I think it was, Dad returned home.

So, much of Mum's early life was spent in Hayle and that is also where she spent her last few weeks, it must be special!
