Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit Tenzing's JustGiving page.
“Tenzing C is a sponsored pupil at Dr Graham's Homes - or at least he is officially, but he is not at the moment! You see Tenzing became quite ill whilst at the school a couple of years ago and has leukemia.”
Tenzing's illness is being treated but regular medical support is very expensive. He now lives in a Tibetan settlement in Bandhara, Maharashtra with his family. Tenzing became part of the Dr. Graham's Homes 'family' when he was able to join the school as a sponsored 4½ year old boarder, thanks to the very generous initiative of Angela Radcliffe, a former teacher at Chandling Manor School, Oxford, UK, and the staff and children there. He is the only child amongst his siblings to get a good education.
Lady Sedhar Ball (née Chozam), a former trustee of the UK Committee, herself a Tibetan and once a sponsored child at the Homes, came across Tenzing whilst on a family trip to Dharamsala, India, in March 2011. Tenzing and his older sister and brother were also visiting Dharamsala, to get Tibetan medicine for his yet unknown illness. Sedhar insisted then that he should go to the Tibetan hospital and be seen by a doctor. Following several tests, Tenzing was sent to Chandigarh, where he was diagnosed as suffering from leukemia.
Happily, but only after a great deal of unpleasant and uncomfortable treatments - all whilst living in a rented room with his brother and sister close to the hospital - Tenzing's health is improving. His recovery today is such that he is about to return to The Homes (April 2014) and resume his education. However, he needs regular treatment and overnight accommodation, within easy access of suitable hospital facilities in Siliguri, some 3 hrs. drive away from Kalimpong. He faces another year or two of discomfort. Inevitably there is a great deal of money involved in expensive treatments.
Back in the UK, Sedhar has put in much effort into fundraising for Tenzing's chemotherapy sessions as well as his accommodation, travel and his daily living costs. Can you help Tenzing too? Some £7,000 is forecast as being needed to get Tenzing well again and, whilst his treatment thus far has been funded by individuals and through local fund raising, a more stable source of funding is needed to ensure his recovery. Jim Simpson, Chair of Dr Graham’s Homes UK Committee and Sponsor Secretary, has maintained a keen interest in, and involvement with, Tenzing’s welfare since his diagnosis. Jim says "We are perhaps half way there - Daddy Graham we know would have asked everyone to make one final effort to get Tenzing safely and healthily back to Hart Cottage! Please celebrate Founder's Day 2013 by donating whatever you can!!"
