Story
“You can’t be sad when riding a bike.” (Sir Chris Hoy)
I don’t know about sad Chris, but I’ll ask the rider’s their opinion on lap 10
The Brathay 262 is the brain child of some rather amazing athletes who have taken the Brathay 10in10 event, in which participants run a marathon length course 10 times in 10 days, and basically throw in a bike. … And shortened the time. … To 24 hours…
At noon on Friday 9th September 2016, our 12 brave riders will leave Brathay Lodge, to pedal 262 miles by 12:00 pm the following day– all on a wing and a prayer. Most likely caffeine will make come into play too.
The riders will not only be faced with the unenviable task of staying awake for 24 hours, they will also have to battle through physical exhaustion and mental fatigue, whilst navigating in the darkness of a September night, on uneven and mountainous terrain. Which to be fair sounds like a fun family day out.
Some people will ask the obvious question: “why are you choosing to complete this frankly insane physical challenge, rather than sitting on your sofa watching hilarious reruns of Take Me Out? ” Answer : the children of the Brathay Trust. The £5000 raised by these amazing riders will be used to better the lives of disadvantaged children, and improving their wellbeing, learning and employability.
With the riders putting their bodies, their minds, and for some their dignity on the line, we are asking you to show your support by donating as much as you can. Yes, do it for the kids and for Brathay Trust. But also do it for the bold dozen, who on Saturday night will mostly be found passed out on the lawn from sheer exhaustion.
The Route
The route will be on a mixture of terrains and gradients, so no one can complain of a boring course! Some of our riders have in fact previously completed the 10in10 challenge or Windermere Marathon, so we know it’s doable, in theory. It will just be extremely hard. Good luck guys!
