Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit the 'Theo Walker Fund' JustGiving page.

Theo was born on 20th November 2009 and died only four and half weeks later on 21st December 2009. He was our first child, much longed for and cherished forever.

At Lucy's 20-week scan we discovered Theo had the congenital heart condition, Pulmonary Atresia with intact ventricular septum . As such we knew his life would be both complicated & restricted and include major surgeries & extended hospital time. However following Theo's birth we received the devastating news that Theo's condition was rarer and more complicated then anticipated. Ultimately it was too complex for the consultants and surgeons to be able to perform the procedures they had planned. Palliative care for what remained of his life was our only route.

Throughout a period of indescribable heartbreak, including taking the decision to turn-off Theo's life support machines, we received the most wonderful care and support from the nurses and doctors of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit ('PICU') at The Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

We spent nearly two weeks in PICU before we were unexpectedly able to bring Theo home for the remainder of his life. During this joyful period, we again received unforgettable and special care from Community Nurses linked to the Chase Kids Hospice.

We wish for nothing more than another chance to care for our son. However we know that even if he was still here, life would be full of huge challenges. Consequently the Theo Walker Fund's first fundraising aim is to help families that still have 'their Theo' and rely on the truly inspirational and caring paediatric nurses and doctors of PICU at The Royal Brompton Hospital.

The Royal Brompton may not have the profile of a Great Ormond Street Hospital ('GOSH'), but for kids with heart and lungs conditions it provides the same remarkable life-enhancing care as GOSH does for its little patients.

(P.S. Please save a few pennies & pounds to support us in one of our first major fundraising events in July 2010 when a group of us will be attempting to scale the 3 highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours. Anyone wishing to participate is very welcome to come along for the hike and raise a few quid for Theo!)
