Story

PLEASE READ MY STORY and thank you very much for visiting my page...

Just as an Introduction my motivation to do this event not only comes from the fact I want to raise as much money for the fantastic work walkoncemore do, but from people closest to me. A lot of you will know my best friend Josh went through an extremely difficult time following his dads accident which sadly led to his death. Being close to him and seeing it first hand how upsetting it was made me want to do more. I'm also motivated by every individual that has ever been injured or like one of my best friends lost their lives in conflict. It's not nice to see the suffering people go through first hand. This is why I have chosen Walkoncemore. The work they do is outstanding and the thought of my fundraising being able to change the lives of even just a few individuals inspires me. I will always be in the debt to the people going through a hell of a lot more pain than I can ever imagine and 7 days doesn't even compare. It's the least I can do though, I'm not a rich businessman doing it for personal pride, I'm doing it to make a difference to peoples lives. I appreciate any donations as we look to go beyond the fundraising target for this fantastic charity.

I‘m excited to say that I’ve managed to secure a place in the Marathon Des Sables 2017.I will supply a link at the bottom of this section so you can visit the website for a better understanding of the event. However for now, In April, I’ll be arriving in the Sahara desert to complete the series of marathons, whilst raising vital money and awareness for spinal cord injury research charity, Walkoncemore. This will clearly be a difficult event, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge and hoping that you’ll all get behind me as I prepare for it. It's important to explain at this stage that this is not just an event you turn up to on the day and run. This will consume my life for a year with training, fundraising, promoting and still working. I fully accept that this is nothing compared to what others go through, It's just to give you guys a rough idea of how my life will change because of this event and the great people I will meet on the way.

As a six-day, 254 km (156 mile) ultra-marathon, and the equivalent to six regular marathons, the MDS is widely renowned as the toughest footrace on Earth. In the lead up to this event, I will cover thousands of kilometres in training in order to prepare my body for the pain This event will no doubt bring. That still will nowhere near compare to how tough daily life is for millions of people around the World after falling victim to a spinal cord injury, however. This is why I am aiming to raise as much money and awareness as possible towards a cure for this debilitating condition.

In an instant, a paralysing SCI robs the victim and their loved ones of so much. As things stand, once a person suffers damage to their spinal cord, it is largely permanent, and the individual is usually left having to live with severe disability through paralysis. The research that Walkoncemore supports will make this a thing of the past before long. New and old injuries will become temporary, allowing the person affected to regain full sensation, function and mobility.

Like you will hear over the coming year from me quite a lot every little bit really does help, and your generosity will motivate me round this difficult course. I am looking to raise a minimum of £5,000, but I am highly motivated to exceed this with your kindness and generosity.

Thank you for taking the time out to read this page I really appreciate your continued support,

Tom Colwill
