Chrissi’s dear friend Mike Perry and his son Jake are going to cycle 918 miles in 12 days from John O'Groats to Lands' End, to raise money for the Oxford Transplant Centre. They intend to start on the 28 July and finish on the 8 August. Most people do this journey the other way round to take advantage of the prevailing South Westerly winds however Mike, in his infinite wisdom (or madness) wants to go the other way, against the wind!! – his excuse is that it is easier to get back to Reading from Lands End than it is from John O’Groats – maybe he has a point? I still think he’s bonkers!
Chrissi’s Story and the Oxford Transplant Centre
My wife Chrissi had her first kidney transplant at Oxford in 1995 when she was 37 years old. Her own kidneys failed due to long term diabetes, which she had had since she was 18 months old. 10 years later in 2005, after a relatively normal life, her transplanted kidney began to fail and she was offered another, but this time with a new Pancreas as well. So in 2006 Chrissi was given a new Kidney and Pancreas in the same operation and as a result was finally cured of Diabetes having suffered the disease for 49 years….Fantastic stuff!!!
Unbelievably in 2009 Chrissi began a fight against cancer, which was a very tough cross to bear after everything else that had gone before. Sadly Chrissi lost this particular battle and passed away peacefully in January this year.
Chrissi was the most amazing and courageous person who struggled with her health throughout her entire, but relatively short life. However, without the help, support and brilliant work of the Oxford Transplant Centre, Chrissi’s life would have been 17 years shorter.
So we want to thank the Oxford Transplant Centre and all the staff, Doctors and Nurses for giving Chrissi those extra 17 years of precious life. And we want to try and make sure that they are able to continue the fantastic work that they do, so that others like Chrissi can benefit in the future.
So please support Mike and Jake on their epic journey, against the wind, and let’s raise tons of money for this very worthy cause.
