Story
1 in 4 women have experienced rape or attempted rape. I am one of them.
NRCC provides a safe, supportive environment, phone helplines and face to face counselling for women like me. A non-judgemental place, where we can be ourselves again. They also go out into the community (and the Twitterverse) to advocate for change, speaking about the myths, the realities and educating people.
The centre, over the time I've been there, has changed my life around. From a point where I could barely leave the house at night, couldn't be alone or trapped in a room with men, I have now been camping in Finland, slept in a cardboard box, started going back to the gym, out to parties and been able to volunteer and take part in campaigns like the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts' Stop The Violence campaign. It's time to give something back.
When I decided to do Writes 4 Women, there was no doubt what my charity would be. But I wanted to set myself the most challenging target I could, both physically and emotionally. So instead of fiction, I decided that I would write about my personal experience of sexual assault, how it has affected me and my continued journey.
