Story
My lovely friend Laura was diagnosed with cancer in March 2013, at the age of 32. I immediately felt the need to do 'something', and with the help of friends came up with the idea of tackling a triathlon. I asked Laura to nominate a charity, and she chose St Peter's.
Laura underwent a course of chemotherapy, remaining incredibly cheerful and positive throughout. Although she appeared much better when her treatment finished in September, her condition worsened rapidly a couple of months later, and sadly she died on boxing day. I will miss her forever.
I completed three triathlons in 2014. I then won a competition in 220 Triathlon magazine to be mentored by Chrissie Wellington, four time Ironman world champion and world record holder! So a big challenge was required.
My A-goal was the Alpe d'Huez long distance triathlon: 2.2K swim in a mountain lake, 115K bike (including the famous Tour de France climb amongst others), and a 22K run. Slightly further than a half Ironman, and extremely tough with 2700m ascent on the bike. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I got there in the end!
It's been an incredible year, and I am forever indebted to everyone who has supported me in whatever capacity. I could not have done it without you.I have written about the experience in (great!) detail on my blog.
