Leaside is an outdoor educational trust based in Hackney which focuses on young people having trouble at school, at home, with the police or their peers. For many of the 1,000 young people that use Leaside each year, the charity is their first step towards a better life. They provide a positive alternative to their users, teaching them educational, fun and inspiring outdoor activities in a peaceful setting, including canoeing, mountain biking, raft-building, orienteering and expeditions.
In addition to daytime sessions for schools, Leaside also offers accredited training courses, evening and weekend sessions and trips away from inner city life. The charity’s main focus is to encourage young people to stay in education, develop their confidence, leadership skills and ambition.
There are over 10,000 user visits each year to Leaside’s centre in Hackney of which approx. 40% have special needs including physical disabilities and behavioural problems. Most of the young users live on nearby housing estates and come from low income, single parent families. Some live in care (in children’s homes or foster care).
