Story
Students and Staff from the University of St Andrews have been developing the unique and groundbreaking Project Zambia since 2009. Due to the success of this project over the past few years, we have now been invited to join six other sports-focussed UK Universities (Loughborough, Bath, Durham, Northumbria, UWIC and Stirling) on the UK Sport IDEALS Project (International Development Through Excellence and Leadership in Sport). The project has since been renamed UK Sport IDEALs to reflect this change.
The project concept is based on this belief: sport with a positive orientation, when integrated into the broader framework of human and social development goals and priorities, is a powerful vehicle for change. As almost every child in Zambia participates in sport, either through merely watching or actually playing, sport presents a medium of communication that children and youth are both familiar with, and willing to participate in. Each student, as a qualified coach in their sport will be coaching and working with young people to tackle issues such as poverty alleviation, vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and child-rights in underprivileged communities in Zambia.
The students, and staff, travel to Zambia to live and work in the communities, schools and orphanages for the summer months in conjunction with the Zambian organisations Sport and Action and Edusport. Throughout the seven week placement the students will be involved in sports coaching and counselling, using these methods to try to educate young people in Zambia on prevalent health issues such as HIV/AIDS.
