The first trip made by students from Fullbrook School, New Haw, to Marich Pass was in 1995. In 2000, having had numerous fund raising activities in the intervening years as more and more students visited, the decision was made to form a charity to help Educational Projects in this remote area of West Pokot. In 2015, the 20th anniversary of the first trip, the Founder Trustee, of “Friends”, Judith Gibbons, began the organisation of a March to Marich, whereby participants would use their day to day activities to jointly notch up the number of steps it would take to walk to West Pokot, being sponsored to walk the whole distance (between them). Unfortunately during the latter stages of organising the event, her husband, Erik, also a Trustee of the charity was taken ill after an accident on holiday and the plans had to be put on the back boiler. Sadly Erik’s health never returned and in May 2016 he passed away. Erik was an avid supporter of everything the charity tried to achieve and had made a number of visits himself to the area, where “Baba Dhomorita” was well loved and respected. We have decided to revive the challenge in his memory, to try to enhance, just a little, any of the projects in the Marich area, that need support at this time. As well as fees for education, at the moment a great deal of support has been necessary for medical situations. The cost of medical help is usually more exorbitant than we could possibly imagine, compared pro rata with incomes and medical costs in the UK.
