Story
Hello All,
In May/June this year I will be one of the 20 person All Hands Volunteers team taking on the challenge of hiking to Everest Base Camp. The trek will take almost 2 weeks to complete. With an elevation of 5,360m (17,585ft) and just half the oxygen of that at sea level, this is going to be a very difficult challenge! After completing the hike I will remain in Nepal for a further week and volunteer on the project.
We are doing it to collectively raise $60,000 to help the people of Nepal continue to recover from last year's devastating earthquake. The magnitude 7.8 quake killed more than 9,000 people (including 19 on Everest, the deadliest single day in the history of climbing the mountain), injuring more than 23,000 and making countless more homeless.
Last June I spent 3 weeks with All Hands on Project Nepal where I helped to demolish unsafe buildings, clear up the mountains of rubble, and build shelters for those that were made homeless or were too scared to live inside.
I found the Nepali people to be extremely kind and welcoming. I met small children, only 5 or 6 years old, who had to walk for more than an hour to school each day. Schools that were so badly damaged that they were unsafe and leaked badly when it rained. Useless when monsoon season arrived. Should children have to learn in this environment?
I want to be clear on something from the start. All of my personal expenses for this challenge (flights, accom, food, equipment etc) I am paying for myself (about £1,500). EVERY PENNY RAISED will be used directly to help the people of Nepal rebuild their lives, be it used for rebuilding schools or earthquake resilient shelters. EVERY PENNY will make a difference.
