*Update 01/12/2013* Little Alice had her appointment with the specialist consultant vet. After a thorough investigation and various tests he decided to first try and treat her poorly ears with medication rather than going to straight to surgery. We are delighted to report that so far so good! Alice has now been rehomed as an Assisted Adoption Dog though, and we remain responsible for any future costs associated with her ears. Our Assisted Adoption scheme gives our dogs with ongoing medical conditions a better chance of finding a home, as the adopters do not need to worry about the costs of future treatment. Good luck Alice!
*Update 15/11/13* Please welcome new dog Wonky Dog Buster. Buster is an epileptic Patterdale who has been in our care for several months after being taken to the vets for euthanasia by his owner. Over the last few weeks his fits gave been getting worse and he has had an MRI scan and spinal tap. They have both come back as clear fortunately so not that any nasties such as a tumour have been ruled out we have changed his meds and he is now being monitored closely.
*Update 31/10/2013* Whilst he was at the vets, one fo the vet nurses fell for Whiskey's charms. She has now adopted him and very kindly covered all his vet fees! We have adjusted the target accordingly. Be happy lovely boy.
*Update 12/10/2013* Since launching this Appeal we have also been hit with another large bill. Roly is an ex-puppy farm Labrador. He came into our care as a puppy via a vets practice. He was extremely poorly with several medical problems including hip dysplasia. Roly featured in the BBC Wales Week In Week Out documentary exposing his puppy farmer. He was rehomed as an "assisted adoption" dog as we knew he would need expensive future vet care and we remain responsible for any vet costs associated with his wonky hips and elbows. Sadly Roly has recently found himself in extreme pain and X-rays have revelaed he now needs a total hip replacement at a cost of £3,000. As always, we will ensure Roly gets the very best vet care and your support is very much appreciated.
*Original Appeal* Hope Rescue prides itself on its intake policy. They commit to take all the strays from two Local Authority pounds irrespective of breed, age or condition. They also pride themselves that the dogs in their care get the very best vet treatment with quality rather than cost being the driver. However, maintaining these policies and standards unfortunately comes at a price. This month they have three special dogs undergoing exceptionally high cost vet treatment. Their Fundraising Team work extremely hard to raise funds. They are out almost everything single weekend come rain or shine. Whilst Hope Rescue try and limit their direct appeals, every now and they do need a little extra help. The combined cost of their Wonky Girl’s treatment is estimated at a massive £4,500:
SPARKLE
Many of you have followed Sparkle’s story. She is a deaf and blind colliewobble – the result of a double merle breeding - who found herself in the pound as a puppy. Hope Rescue have already committed significant funds to her vet care and today she underwent a further operation to remove her eye. A symptom of her microphthalmia, Sparkle was born with blood vessels that did not close properly and a couple of weeks ago she suffered a bleed in her eye. The danger wasn't from the actual bleed, but from the fact that the eye doesn't like having blood in it, and so each time this happens the eye will just become more damaged and more uncomfortable. The operation was carried out at a specialist referral vets at a cost of £1,700 (including the pre-op treatment). The operation went well and Sparkle is now home and recovering.
ALICE
Alice, a beautiful scruffpot of a terrier, came into Hope Rescue's care from the pound with dreadful ear polyps. Their vet has advised that she has chronic ear disease and stenosis in her left ear, probably caused by untreated infections and a haematoma. She may also have ear canal disease. She will require one of two operations at a specialist referral vets – either a Lateral Aural Resection or a Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA). Neither of these options are cheap and the costs have been estimated at £2,200 including the pre-op referral.
WHISKEY
Whiskey is a one year old colliewobble. She is an ex-working dog who broke her hind leg and was taken to the vets to be destroyed. The vets contacted Hope Rescue instead and they agreed to take her in. They took a decision to save her leg rather than the cheaper option of amputation. The referral vets have very kindly agreed to do the operation at the cost price of £600 and she will go under the knife this week.
These dogs are all young dogs who deserve a chance and the very best care. These costs are a huge strain on Hope Rescue's resources on top of the usual vet, kennel and transport costs. Please make a donation and help the Wonky Girls.
