Today is an extraordinary day. Today we need your help to care for not one but three young dogs that all need complex surgery.

Coco, a 3 year old Pomeranian came to us a few weeks ago when her owners could no longer keep her. In her short life she has already had one major surgery to repair a patella luxation when she was just a year old. Unfortunately this surgery didn’t work she desperately needed surgery on both her hind legs to deepen the grooves in her femurs.

Stray Josie is only 8 months old and has already found herself in our care, urgently needing surgery to correct her abnormal kneecaps. This young terrier was noticed to have an ‘odd’ stance by our dog care team and on examination by our veterinary team we suspect she also has medial patella luxation in both hind legs, just like Coco. The abnormality in her joints causes her kneecaps to not align correctly with the grooves in her thigh bones and so they are almost permanently dislocated, causing her to have trouble walking and even sitting comfortably.

Smartie also came to us off the streets of Cambridgeshire and is suspected to have Legg-Perthes Disease, a serious condition which sees the disintegration and eventual collapse of the top of the thigh bone. Its cause is unknown, although thought to be genetic, but it is an incredibly painful condition where the bone and surrounding cartilage degenerate and die causing the hip joint to become disfigured. Leaving the dog unable to walk or bear any weight on the leg. Smartie’s surgery will involve the complete removal of her femoral head, allowing the top of the femur to become part of the new hip joint.

Thankfully all these young dogs are now in safe hands and following surgery will have long pain-free futures ahead of them, but we need your help.

Whilst we do have funding for major operations, our resources are very limited. The total cost of these operations and aftercare is going to be around £6,000. We urgently need donations from our supporters to help us fund this essential operation.
