Story
Thank you for showing an interest in my efforts to help www.womankind.org.uk
This is a fabulous charity which tries to help and support women's rights in many emerging market countries .
The charity's strap line is 'equal, respected, proud' which I think sums it up quite well but it aims to support women's rights by partnering with local women's rights organisations and helping fund their activities. This approach helps to ensure maximum efficiency, limiting the overheads associated with supporting these charities. The charity finds great projects, worthy of support, and then helps them fundraise and also gives advice to them across a broad range of topics from legal support, training and education and learning.
The areas that the charity focuses on are varied, but include helping improve women's representation in local and national politics - giving women a voice and helping them get better access to government resources and funding for issues which are important to women's lives.
Many of you reading this will perhaps be professionals working in Emerging Markets (EM), and many of you might visit EM countries. But just ask yourself the question as to how many of the politicians or officials you meet are actually women? Likely not many. But an organisation such as www.womankind.org.uk aims to try and change this.
Other areas www.womankind.org.uk focuses on is providing legal rights and support, for example for women suffering domestic abuse.
In terms of geographical coverage www.womankind.org operates in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
However, because of my own background in teaching and educational consulting I have chosen to support a specific project working in remote rural schools in Zambia. This project is the Girls Leadership Programme, which aims to educate girls in rural areas as to ther rights and opportunities. It inspired me as it is a means to let young girls know what they can achieve, and their own rights. Listening to some of the girls' own life stories is quite moving, and indeed inspirational. It makes one want to do more, to enable them to achieve more and to help improve and even change their lives.
