My Story

In January 2015, I went on secondment as part of the Zurich Flood Resilience program to Nepal. I was generously welcomed by and worked with the Practical Action team in Nepal. I was struck by the team's hard work, humility and unfailing dedication to helping the world's poorest communities find practical solutions to the poverty they face.

On 25 April, Nepal suffered a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, killing over 7000 people and injuring over 10'000. Now just 17 days later, another earthquake of similar magnitude has hit the east of the country. The devastation to buildings, infrastructure and people's lives has not stopped with the quakes.  People have lost their homes, water systems are disrupted and the onset of the monsoon means there is an urgent need for temporary shelters, clean water supply and sanitation. The spread of disease threatens to add to the death toll.

Three of the projects that Practical Action work with in Nepal (in Gorkha, Pokhara and Kathmandu) have been badly affected. As with all of Practical Action's projects, they are taking a holistic view of the aid they provide, not just providing emergency relief in the short term but helping to rebuild the communities’ homes and build their resilience to future quakes in the long term. 

My instinct two weeks ago was to leap on a plane back to the beautiful, magical, chaotic country that I had fallen in love with to help the friends I’d made and strangers I’d shared a tea with. Yet for all the hugs I could have given, the reality is that crises like these need skilled aid workers who can make an immediate difference. And those workers need fast cash. So this is why I’m here, organizing a raffle to raise funds so that Practical Action in Nepal can do the work they are best experienced to do.

Prize draw
The prize draw will take place on Wednesday 27 May at the Austrasse kiosk on the second floor at 13:30 CET. You will be alerted by email if you have won.

Where does my money go?
Your donation will go straight to Practical Action to help in relief and sustainable rebuilding efforts.

Anyone may donate to this worthy cause, however please note the prize draw is open only to Zurich Insurance employees.
