AC KAYAking - Moving forward one stroke at a time

Kayaking across the Bristol Channel,

Fundraising for the China Summer Project and UWC scholarships

Building schools for deprived Children in Gansu, China

WHAT: This summer an event will take place which gives you the chance to impact the lives of many disadvantaged children. In June 2012, 35 international students from the UWC Atlantic College, an international school with a student body representing over 80 different nationalities, are travelling to a deprived area in the north of China to lead a summer school for local children. Through supplying them with educational materials and psychological support, our work will give them a wider understanding of the world, while also providing them with considerable financial aid.

WHY:

£6,500 can build a school building for deprived children in China allowing them receive education.

£3,000 could provide children with a sports ground, enabling them to experience team-work and sportsmanship in a safe environment.

£30 is not only the price of a mid-weekly shop, but could supply a child with food for an entire year.

£8 could buy you a cinema ticket, or donate a set of tables and chairs for children to write on.

10 pence is not only spare change but can purchase a dozen pencils allowing children to draw their dreams.

HOW: In order to facilitate these worthwhile aims, we need to raise money through private donors and the organisation of fundraising events. One such event which you can sponsor is our plan to kayak across the Bristol Channel. The challenge is being undertaken by a group of young lifeguards, all between16 and 19 years old, who are currently studying at UWC Atlantic College situated in South Wales, the United Kingdom.

THE EVENT: AC KAYAking has selected a group of students representing 15 nationalities and 6 continents will attempt to kayak across the Bristol Channel from St Donat’s Castle (the home of UWC Atlantic College) to Porlock Wier, Somerset. The final list of kayakers will be announced in May. The total distance, from point to point, is 42.6 kilometres, and the journey across is expected to take at least 6 hours during which time the students will have to deal with treacherous currents (the Severn Estuary has the second largest tidal range in the world) while also keeping their wits about them in a busy shipping lane. The adverse conditions make this challenge very demanding and the group of students taking part will undergo rigorous training as preparation in order to overcome the hostile environment of the Bristol Channel.

Donations of any size are welcome: thank you for taking the time to read about and support our cause.
