Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Miracles happen at Birmingham children's hospital due to the tireless efforts of the Consultants, Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses, they however can only make miracles happen with the aid of extremely expensive equipment especially in intensive care and by donating will allow other children like Jobe to experience the most amazing miracle - the miracle of life.
Below is a poem Ben (Jobe's father) wrote as we left intensive care on October 18th 2012, it is dedicated to the nurses who, overworked and underpaid showed such devotion to Jobe's care displayed the humanity that still remains in our wonderful NHS system when absolutely required.
Angels without wings
It was the twenty eighth of September twenty twelve,
Our lives would change, into darkness we’d delve.
Baby Jobe with blue eyes and curly blonde hair,
Would lead us on a journey into intensive care.
To Ross community hospital we did speed,
An air ambulance to Birmingham we did need,
Into the helicopter his mum beside him,
The nightmare had began, things looked so grim.
The helicopter landed on Steelhouse lane,
Only seconds went by before the doctors came,
They didn’t give up, they did what they do,
And when they were done, headed up to ICU.
Nobody slept that night, it was rough,
But kept reminding ourselves, that boy is so tough.
We didn’t know hospitals, they were just for the sick,
But now we were in one following that sickening kick.
I’ll never forget the first drive to the city,
Filled with worry, upset and self pity.
In room 12 he was, under the intensive care team,
I couldn’t’ go in – it felt like a dream.
For days I just paced for dark thoughts to disperse,
And when nurse Nicky came out, I feared the worse,
But with her by my side although I wanted to run,
She kept me so calm and sat me down by my son.
It was then that I realised the most wonderful thing,
The care he was getting was fit for a king,
They explained the machinery that went to his brain,
And said don’t look at numbers – they’ll drive you insane!
The most wonderful nurses we met day and night
And please forgive me if I don’t recognise you by sight,
What I do know now, as we were a stranger,
Our family was safe from all the great danger.
One constant remained week after week,
The nurses who cared and we now fondly do speak,
You nurses went beyond even that extra mile,
And when Jobe came round, you had a genuine smile.
A million thank you’s doesn’t come near,
To explain what you’ve done for our family this year,
We would like to buy presents, gifts and all things,
But what can we buy an Angel without wings?
One thing is for certain, one thing is for sure,
One day we’ll be back, coming in through that door.
You will meet baby Jobe blue eyes and blonde hair,
And you can meet that boy that you showed such care.
