I haven't said anything so far about this but here goes....
The reason I joined SAR is that about 10 or 15 years ago or so my Grandma Eileen was diagnosed with dementia after having walked all the way from Shoreham-by-Sea to both Brighton and Chichester on separate occasions and both times she was brought home to us by very kind members of the public - the last time this happened the taxi driver who dropped her off came in to my uncle's house to make sure she got in OK and then promptly refused to take any money for either the journey or the extra time he had taken to do this - he simply asked for a cup of tea!
SO - why am I telling you this - I had no opportunity to thank this Taxi driver and so a few years ago I decided to join a Search and Rescue team so as to pay this kindness forward.
THE TRUTH - the truth about Search and rescue teams are ran manned and funded by donations from volunteers and members of the public..... all search and rescue teams in the UK, ALL OF IT, EVERY SINGLE ONE, with NO exception.
When I first discovered this I was filled with both disgust and amazement - disgust at us as a nation for not caring enough about the missing and amazed by the people who run the teams.
BOTTOM LINE - I need money, not for me or my family but for the team of people in surrey who spend their days and nights walking out of their door for nothing else except the knowledge that there is someone who will stay missing unless they do something about it.
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR CASH! - I'm jumping out of a plane for it after all!!
Thanks
Benji!
