This devastating disease has taken five young elephants from us, including female calf Bala. When first diagnosed, the zoo veterinary team began immediate treatment using anti-viral medication.  Despite early intervention and the rapid response, the treatment was unsuccessful and sadly Bala died.

With your help, we can increase our efforts and fund a number of different research projects. From understanding the natural immunity in some populations to culturing the virus and identifying which drugs are most effective in treating the disease, we can find a vaccine to eradicate it both in zoos and in the wild.
