Story
The Filarial Programme Support Unit (FPSU) at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is dedicated to the fight against filarial diseases (Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis), Loaisis and Onchceriasis). Painful and profoundly disfiguring, these diseases are a leading cause of permanent disability worldwide.
People affected are very often outcast by their communities and are unable to work and provide for their families. As a result they suffer mentally, socially and financially, which in in turn contributes to stigma and poverty. Elimination of LF is possible by stopping the spread of the infection. We currently work with 12 countries and assist in the delivery of millions of treatments, to stop the transmission and improve the quality of life of those already affected.
FPSU supports activities in Africa, Americas, Asia and Pacific Island nations, to reduce the burden of these neglected tropical diseases.
Together we can bring an end to this suffering.
