Story
"I trust that England will not forget one who nursed her sick, who sought out her wounded to aid and succour them, and who performed the last offices for some of her illustrious dead." Sir William Howard Russell, TheTimes newspaper war reporter, on Mary Seacole in 1857.
Mary Seacole was a Jamaican/Scottish doctress/nurse & entrepreneur (1805-1881). She overcame rejection in London when offering her services to nurse ill & wounded soldiers in the Crimea. Mary was so determined that she paid her own passage to provide soldiers with food, a morning dispensary plus nursing care, on & off the battlefield.
To capture Mary Seacole's spirit, a memorial statue is due to be erected in the in the grounds of St. Thomas' hospital. It will overlook the River Thames & Houses of Parliament & will be the 1st statue to a named black woman in the UK.
Thank you so much ! All the funds have now been raised to produce the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue in the spring of 2016.
