Story

Established in 2000 by New Writing North, the Northern Writers’ Awards are the UK’s leading talent development programme for both adult and young writers.

The awards support both new and established writers to develop their work towards publication and to progress their careers as writers. For new writers, winning a Northern Writers’ Award can help to connect you to the publishing industry and to develop your work towards publication; for established writers, awards can help to buy time to write to support the development of work in progress and offer creative opportunities.

With high-profile literary judges and support from across the publishing industry, the awards are now recognised nationally as a major talent-spotting programme that identifies and nurtures great writers.

Recent winners of Northern Writers' Awards include Benjamin Myers, Zaffar Kunial, Andrew McMillan and Mari Hannah.

The Northern Writers’ Awards are supported by Northumbria University, and Arts Council England.

New Writing North is the development agency for creative writing and reading in the North of England. We work in partnership with regional and national partners to produce a range of literary and performance activities including flagship projects such as The Northern Writers’ Awards, the Gordon Burn Prize and Durham Book Festival. We specialise in developing and investing in writers of all ages and act as a dynamic broker between writers, producers, publishers and broadcasters across the creative industries. Our entrepreneurial approach to talent development has also seen us launch new writers via our Moth Publishing crime imprint in partnership with Business Educational Publishers and work with Northumbria University to stage the innovative Crime Story festival event. As a producer of new work we commission a wide range of writing from topical essays and publications to award-winning dance theatre productions, short films, live literature and broadcast projects. Our work with young people includes work in schools with children and their teachers and activity outside of school including the literary magazine Cuckoo Quarterly and Cuckoo Press alongside our young cultural journalism website Cuckoo Review.
