Story
Khuluma is a low cost and sustainable solution set up to address the mental health challenges of HIV positive adolescents in South Africa. We provide facilitated and interactive support to closed groups of 10 to 15 participants who are able to communicate freely amongst themselves and with a facilitator via mobile phone about topics such as drug adherence or how they are feeling. Khuluma was set up to help them overcome the stigma and discrimination that surrounds them; the time needed and sufficient funds to attend a physical support group; and not having enough trained staff within clinics to run tailored support groups. 85% of people with mental health conditions who live in developing countries have no access to treatment.
The uniqueness of Khuluma lies in its accessibility;immediacy; intimacy and safety; and a peer-based approach to running a support group in order to help the HIV positive adolescents to live active and fulfilled lives.
