Story
Hi everyone! I'm raising funds for MCAI, a network of obstetricians who train doctors and midwives in Liberia. My aunt is currently out there helping to train local staff as well as carrying out all kinds of operations. There is an extreme shortage of doctors in Liberia. There are at least three reasons for this. One is the armed conflict between 1989 and 2003. Another is that more than three quarters of doctors trained in Liberia have emigrated. Finally, 184 health workers in Liberia died from Ebola virus disease in the 2014–2016 outbreak.
According to the ministry of health, only 117 doctors were available in the country in February 2015. Over the past few years their work has vastly reduced the mortality rates of mothers and infants. More importantly they are educating local staff to Masters and diploma level which means they are paid more by the government, are less likely to emigrate and can train even more staff.
I'll be running, cycling and kayaking 42km on April 23rd in Quest Glendalough Adventure Race to raise funds for the charity! I'd really appreciate a donation of any size, it all helps to send out more doctors and educators.
