Orangutans are beautiful, noble, intelligent creatures, under threat from the destruction of their habitat. They need space to roam to get access to different ripening fruits throughout the year. The Orangutan Foundation does more than protect the animals; they work with the local communities to let them see the value of their local wildlife, and try to prevent the rainforests being destroyed. For example, Sarawak (part of Malaysian Borneo) has only 0.5% of the world's tropical rainforest but accounted for 25% of tropical-log exports in 2010. As well as donating directly, we can all do our bit by trying to reduce our consumption of palm oil, as much of the cleared rainforest land is used for palm oil plantations.
