Hi and welcome!

My name is Alun Millard, and I'm a support worker for people with Learning Disabilities. Over 8 years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a new gentleman who was moving into the scheme where I worked. That gentleman was David Emerson.

David was a kind and caring man, quiet except with those he knew well. He had a big sense of humour and many is the time when I would tell him an awful cheesy joke, only to be met with a cheeky smile and an "Oooooh dear!"

David was an avid reader, with 2-3 books on the go at any one time. Sitting in his favoured chair, reading his books or the news, was how he would spend his evening. But David did more than that, too. He enjoyed a variety of social activities from attending football matches (Notts County FC) to going on holidays. As one of his support workers, I was able to share in these activities with him, and I am feel lucky that I was able to contribute to the life of such a wonderful man.

One of the things he enjoyed was attending Nottingham Mencap at their shop on Angel Row. David would go every Tuesday, and attended for many years.

Sadly, David passed away last year. He is missed by many including his family, friends, those who worked with him and those who lived with him. When I decided that I wanted to do some fundraising in his memory, Nottingham Mencap was the logical choice - it was very personal to David, a place he went for a long time and a place he got so much out of going to. 

So for 2014, all my fundraising efforts are for Nottingham Mencap, in memory of David. As present I have signed up for the Nottingham Half-Marathon, but may add more events during the year - information will be found at my website - alun.be
