Story
We are a group of 3
dentists and 4 dental nurses from Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) who spent 2 weeks of our annual leave in Zomba, Malawi, in May 2014 to
promote dental health and provide treatment to those in need. We visited schools to provide dental education and worked alongside local dental staff at Zomba Central Hospital and outreach clinics. The trip was organised
as part of the Trust’s long-standing charity link with the city, which has
also seen doctors and nurses visit to offer their medical support and
expertise.
The dental department of Zomba Central Hospital is manned by two dentists and six dental therapists. Each day they treat an average of 90 patients and during national oral health week they hold 7 dental clinics/camps to provide dental health education for children at orphanages and primary schools. The dental staff in Zomba can really struggle to obtain basic equipment and supplies. Thanks to the generosity of existing supporters of the HDFT charitable fund along with donations from local dental practices and dental companies, we were able to take a supply of materials and equipment with us.
Please help us to improve the lives of those we see in Zomba, Malawi, and help to strengthen the charity link with Zomba by making a donation today.
