Story

To raise money for charity is a fantastic thing for anyone
to do, and at the end of this story I am going to do the same, but first I need to tell you a story about courage, resilience & total dedication and
commitment.

Back in July 2012, following a simple but terrible accident at home, my dad’s life changed forever.

He lost his sight in one eye and was left with almost nothing in his other.

After too many years to count of working 2 jobs, being the family breadwinner, providing for us 4 children, his father and our amazing mom, his world came crashing down. All of a sudden my independent dad, needed help just to get around his own home.

Several operations and what I can only describe as the “magic” that the Birmingham Midlands eye Hospital’s phenomenal doctors/surgeons/nurses and other carers, my dad gained some sight, at least enough to see my devoted mum and us kids and grand kids. We knew that it would never be the same again, but these amazing people gave our family the chance to resemble some kind of normality (minus the driving of course!) through their abilities, after care and dedication he claimed his independence again.

What my dad must have gone through at the time of his accident and indeed to this day amazes me. He has adapted, accepted and pushed every part of himself to it's limits and beyond, and still carried on doing all he could for the people he serves within his community.

So, New Year 2016 came and dad wasn’t well, but being the “typical bloke “ that he is, had to be pushed to go and get checked out.

Our world ( or so we thought ) came crashing down again. My dad,
my rock, my inspiration – the most hard working, honest independent person I have ever known was diagnosed with high grade Non Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Aggressive Blood Cancer and virtually no sight? I mean seriously? Who wouldn’t have given up after all this?

But this is where MY DAD with the love of MY MOM, really stepped up a gear. The first male I ever loved in my life, didn’t give up instead 3 months down the line is fighting ( and winning) this fight too!!!

On a daily basis, he gets up and takes on another day, adapting with every change, fighting every little step and getting closer and closer to the finish line.

I know he will do it, he’s my dad. He is the strongest person I have ever met. If anyone can MY DAD can.

Still working, still helping others, still making other lives better, whilst taking drugs that make him feel worse, make him tired, limit his mobility…….he keeps fighting this, making me realise that actually “bad days” for the majority of us, are not really that bad a day.

So when I get a skydive for my birthday (from mom & dad) I have decided I want to raise some much deserved funds for Sandwell & West Bham Hospital & Bham Midland Eye Hospital, to say thank you for looking after my dad, for going that extra mile and pushing their expertise to the limits, for the care and compassion and patience that all the support staff have given and continue to do so each and every single day. To give a small amount back to the men & women that gave to my dad is the least I can do.  BUT MOST OF ALL……..

I want to tell my dad that I am so so proud of him How amazed I am by his courage, his drive and determination to face each day head on. To deal with all his has done and keeps doing over the past 4 years and yet
is still there for me when I need his help & support.

A jump out of a plane doesn’t seem that amazing after this story…….but if I can raise some money for these people,  people that I will forever be in debt to, whilst being able to tell my dad and the whole world how very proud of him that I am, how every day he reminds me that you get out what you put in, and to tell both him and mom how much they mean to me…….then lets get on with it!!!

So 21st May 2016 at midday, I am throwing myself out of a plane!!!!! Imagine the rush this is gonna give me!!! And after all what my dad has been through, this is nothing really and he sure as hell as taught me that YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE MAKE THE MOST OF IT!!!

Thank you in advance for reading our story and thanks in advance for your support.  Lucy xxxx
