Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Our nurses work night and day in people’s homes and our hospices offer specialist care. We also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.

A Swimathon success story

“I’ve been raising money for Marie Curie for eight years, since my mother died. She was cared for at the Marie Curie Belfast hospice, where she was nursed back to good health after being diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer. They enabled her to have two good years in remission before she later relapsed and died of breast cancer. During remission, mum really embraced life and we had a fantastic time – and that is in no small measure thanks to the care and support we had from Marie Curie.”

“I’ve done 5kms in the Swimathon 3 years in a row and over that time have collected £2,800. When mum died, I needed to lose weight as I hadn’t been looking after myself too well. This has been a great motivator to get fit and stay fit – and now I go swimming four times a week.”

“One of the things that is really good about Swimathon is that, even if you are doing it by yourself, there are other people there with the same sort of motivation and the sense of why you’re all doing it is very strong. It really is a very fun thing to do and there’s a great sense of achievement  afterwards.”
