We organise disaster relief worldwide to be there for people in desperate need

Story

I would like to thank you for pledging your support for our fundraising campaign to help tackle the ebola crisis in the West of Africa. As you will be aware, communities have been blighted by the virus, with thousands of deaths and many children orphaned.

This all pales, though, with what is to come. In the coming weeks and months this crisis could develop into a pandemic, with the World Health Organisation fearing that between 5,000 and 10,000 new cases could be seen each week by the start of December.  Last year we raised a fantastic total of £70,000 in response to the tragedy in the Philippines, and it would be great if we can show a similar level of commitment this time round.

We have created this ‘Kingston and Richmond Schools Fundraiser’ page to help us to keep the money we raise in one place. Money raised will be sent direct to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ebola Crisis Appeal. The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is an umbrella group comprising fourteen UK charities working on disaster related issues and includes charities such as Oxfam, Save the Children, and World Vision.

Schools will be able to add money raised directly through this page. Donations through JustGiving are secure, safe and the site ensures that all money is sent directly to the DEC.

As was the case last year, some pupils will already have carried out some fundraising activities around this issue, and we can count their total in the overall amount. Where this is the case, simply let your business relationship manager (Andy Reeves for Kingston schools, Jason Raymond for Richmond schools) know the amount already raised and they will include in the overall total. You can get in touch with Andy and Jason at:

Andrew.reeves@achievingforchildren.org.uk  Jason.raymond@achievingforchildren.org.uk

Last year I was struck by the variety of fundraising activities that pupils got involved in: some discovered their inner chef by baking at cakes sales, some got active in sponsored 5k runs, and others turned into culture vultures at school film events. I am very proud of this work and hope that we can make a real difference to those countries affected by Ebola through our determined efforts this year.

All best wishes,

Nick Whitfield
