We wanted to do a "Challenge walk" with our mum and dad and saw the West Highland Way - it's a 96 mile walk from Glasgow to Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland. We're going to do it over 8 days in the summer, with the longest day being about 16 miles. Then we heard about the charity run by Olivia's friend's Gran - Medcare. They help children in Uganda with medicine, education and social support - children who can't help themselves. We're walking to help other children learn to walk! Will you help us help them?
Harriet was 4 years old when she went to Medcare's clinic (Wellspring) last year. 4 days previously she had been a normal 4 year old and was a beautiful child. However, she contracted malaria, the biggest killer of Ugandan children, which developed into cerebral malaria . As a result she was blind, did not respond to sound, was unable to sit up or hold her head up and was doubly incontinent. She had reverted to being as helpless as a newborn baby. Medcare sent her as an emergency to hospital where, against all odds, she survived and was eventually discharged into the care of Wellspring. Working with her every day the physiotherapist worked miracles. First her sight returned, then her speech (she chattered all day long!) and gradually her motor ability and her coordination, thanks to special "walker frames". 2 months ago she started school. A little walking miracle!!
So we're walking to help Medcare provide these walking frames. Each costs about £150. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
